Can somebody tell November to slow its roll? I feel like it just started but we’re already a third of the way through it. I feel like I’m going to blink and it’ll be Christmas and then I’ll blink again and it will be 2018 and I’m just not ready for that yet.
Know what else I wasn’t ready for? The fact that the Wonderful World of Disney made its return with Whitney Houston’s Cinderella 20 YEARS AGO. Which leads me to the first of five things I really enjoyed this week:
1. An Oral History of 1997’s Cinderella
Reading this article and finding out how much this movie meant to people all over the world and to the people who made it honestly brought a tear to my eye. I remember watching this with my parents and being awestruck by the wonderful music and beautiful costumes. I was too young to recognize its importance at the time: Brandy was the first black Disney princess, and this show did colorblind casting before it was cool. 20 years later everyone’s talking about how revolutionary Hamilton is while Cinderella tosses her hair and says, “Yeah, we did that twenty years ago.”
Nicole’s assistant came out to see if I was OK and said to me, “If this were easy, it would have been done before.” Those were the right words at the right time to snap me out of it. I said, “OK, this is what it feels like to be making history.” – Debra Martin Chase
I honestly didn’t realize people outside of my family loved this movie as much as we do, but this article gives proper homage to what a wonderful thing they made.
2. This Leonard Cohen mural in Montreal
When this photo came up on my Tumblr dashboard I gasped out loud — I didn’t think it was real. The mural was painted by LA-based artist El Mac as part of Montreal’s Great Artist’s collection. It took ten weeks, 92 gallons of paint, and 240 cans of spray paint and every bit was worth it. It’s beautiful. More info here.
3. Stranger Things 2
I watched all nine episodes within 24 hours, and it was a day. I laughed, I cried, I cried even harder, I screamed, I suffered. I’m just so glad the second season was as good as the first. My favorite character is Dustin, followed closely by Chief Hopper. This also has one of my favorite tv show scores ever, and the soundtrack was masterfully chosen. 10 out of 10, can’t wait to re-watch.
4. This ATFS Moodboard
My lovely friend and fellow writer Erin posted this on her Tumblr earlier this week and I’m obsessed. She perfectly captured the book’s atmosphere.
5.
If you don’t get it, lucky you.
Have a good weekend, sunbeams!
